We are endeavouring to get the cart copied and made in varying sizes in Sri Lanka. Our veterinary advisor in the UK, can also make his own versions of 'wheelie carts'. |
Due to the ill health of Kurana 'Brownie's' guardian - the little dog has now been taken into our care - now living in Colombo with one of our trustees. |
Beach Brownie was rescued in early November 2006, after being dumped by the roadside in Negombo - on the West Coast of Sri Lanka. He was attacked by a local adult dog and sustained a spinal injury - which has left him with hind-limb paralysis. The pup was taken to a local vet and x-rays were taken. There were no obvious fractures, so severe nerve trauma was suspected. Treatment with corticosteroids and antibiotics was attempted. The limbs remain stiff, but warm and 'toe-pinching', can be felt by the pup. Since, this little dog is otherwise bright, eating and toileting as normal -putting him to sleep was unjustified. We were kindly donated a dog cart from the Dog Mobile Company to assist Beach Brownie's mobility. On my return to Sri Lanka - March '07 with the dog cart, I was astounded at how much Beach Brownie' had grown and improved (was able to stand and get about - although cumbersome). He was fitted with the cart and slight adjustments had to be made with regards to the height. Two local friends helped with easing 'Brownie' in to his 'wheelie training sessions'. 'Brownie' had grown considerably and the seat was slightly narrow, but as a pup, he was still growing and had not reached full growth potential. |
Girl Brownie - I had been taken to see another dog (Dec '06) - also called 'Brownie' (but a female) who had been severely injured in a road accident, over a year previously (2005). She was a street dog, who had been taken in by some kind locals - (who run 'Kurana Hardware' Store) and looked after at their home, after visiting a vet for x-rays and basic treatment, when she was first found. This dog had no hind limb movement and was totally paralysed in that region, fused, unable to stand or walk, but toileting normally and safe and happy where she lived. Supplies were left with her carer - to help combat any pressure sores that may arise. During April '07 - I re-visited 'Brownie'(girl). Sadly there had been no improvement in her condition and she was still compromised, being completely unable to use her hind limbs - although very bright in herself. We tried that particular mobility cart on her for suitability, as she was already a grown adult and a smaller dog. She is gaining use from it. |

When leading the way can be painful. Two paralysed Dogs but only one Dog Cart An urgent appeal for funding from Kim Cooling. Animal SOS Sri Lanka - www.animalsos-sl.com. Registered Charity 1119902 |
When we introduced the first ever Dog Cart into Sri Lanka to give a paralysed dog called Beach Brownie, mobility and quality of life, we were soon faced with the painful reality that there were many more similar disabled dogs there. We soon met with another local dog called Girl Brownie, she was in a much worse physical state than Beach Brownie. It was an agonising situation, only one dog cart with two local needy dogs. In consultation with the owners of Beach Brownie the decision was made to give the only dog cart we had to Girl Brownie and start to assess another dog cart for Beach Brownie. |
Lack of funding to be able to help all of the animals in Sri Lanka will always cause us pain, it will also place us in a position where we have to make difficult choices. To us, every stray deserves a chance in life and every life is precious. The sheer scale of animal suffering and need in Sri Lanka is monumental, but with few resources we are limited in what we can do and how many animals we can help. Introducing the first ever Dog Cart into Sri Lanka should have been a joyful experience for us, not the painful one it was. This is just one of the many reasons why we are desperately pleading for funding to enable us to help as many of the suffering animals in Sri Lanka as possible. If you are able, please consider a donation, we are a registered charity, and with our organisation every penny goes towards saving the lives of animals in Sri Lanka and alleviating their suffering. Below are the two paralysed dogs, Beach Brownie is awaiting a replacement dog cart to cater for his growth, Girl Brownie is currently living a happy and mobile life with one of our charity trustees in Sri Lanka.
